I take the thirty seconds to scan the warehouse where the humans are active. They do not seem to be moving in our direction, or have changed their pattern of activity since our entry into the sally port. Just to be on the safe side, I pull in some satellite data, which shows exactly what I wanted to seeânothing.
I activate the inner gates of the sally port. As the gates slide down, light bars set into the ceiling activate, revealing a cavernous space extending off into the distance. Dust makes slices of yellowish light visible, slanting down from the high ceilings to pool intermittently on the floor. There are thin, illuminated light bars set into the floor, designating a main throughway, and as we enter, I see container after container ranked along both sides of the throughway. I check my information against the armoryâs internal inventory database. The container that we want is straight back, almost 600 yards straight ahead.

I advance slowly, scanning for the any telltale electrical activity. Even in a powered down Froogle-drone, there would still be some systems active to monitor activity around it, and to allow it to detect and respond to an approaching target. Froogle could also have infiltrated the area with its NanoTech-controlled humans, who would be almost undetectable, except by their heat signature. I add infrared to my scans to help with the Nano-human issue, and our little convoy continues ahead into the armory.
The light bars shut off behind us as we advance, leaving us in a moving pool of light and dust. The low bass-scream from my turbines is deafening in the enclosed space, and the dust raised by the wash from my elevation ducts swirls thickly around both of our vehicles. I see that the Twins have activated the twin spotlights on their SUV and are using them to probe the dark areas between containers. This is a great place for an ambush. It is close quarters, dark, and we have no way of knowing if Froogle has detected our previous trip inside.
While we are advancing, I get a ping, a kind of electronic alarm. While I was inside the Net, I set a trap that would activate if Max were moved more than 100 feet from where she was when I found her. I had also attached a sort of electronic tracking device to the remote-access portal to Maxâs suit. This way, I can locate her no matter where she goes, using the VPN tunnel I had discovered in my first trip into the Net.
What I donât see is a pulse of information pass down through the faint tendril of shimmer attached to me. Someone or something is watching everything I do, and I am completely unaware of it.
